The
Aim of Sport Specific Training
Where
the athlete is concerned, resistance training and conditioning workouts
are more than just lifting weights and running on a treadmill. Athletic
goals and sport specific needs must guide an athlete’s strength and
conditioning program in order for it to be productive. Furthermore,
athletes require programs that are both sport specific and phase
specific. Sport specific programs take into account the metabolic needs
of the sport, the movement patterns of the sport, the skills required
for optimal performance in the sport, and the preventative measures
needed to keep the athlete from incurring an overuse or acute injury
specific to the sport.
Phase specific programs take into account the
athlete’s competitive schedule, ensuring that he/she "peak"
at the proper time. Each phase has a specific goal. Each goal leads to
the ultimate objective of optimal performance. Strength
and conditioning programs must also take into account the athlete’s
age, training status (fit, semi-fit, unfit), length of time the athlete
has participated in the sport, and prior strength and conditioning
experience. Without these variables factored into the equation, even the
most sport and phase specific programs can leave an athlete fatigued or
injured, or on the flip side, under stimulated. Hence sport specific
training must be highly individualized.
Customized Programming
is the Key!
Most
Personal Trainers are extremely knowledgeable professionals who love to work with
sport specific clients. These professionals will take
the time to sit down with you and determine what your sport related
needs and goals are. Only then will they develop your personal program.
An experienced Personal Trainer will be interested in your athletic success and will work as
hard as they can to make sure you achieve your maximal athletic potential.
